Jeff Hills, ’93 civil engineering, recently established the Jeffery S. Hills Scholarship in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering with a pledge of $10 million. Five outstanding engineering alumni and one longtime faculty member of the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering were honored by the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council during a ceremony Friday, Sept. 13, for their distinguished professional careers. These alumni include four who were recognized as Distinguished Auburn Engineers, one as an Outstanding Young Auburn Engineer and a mechanical engineering professor emeritus for Superior Service. The council also honored alumnus Charles Gavin, ’59 textile engineering, who will receive an honorary doctorate of science at the December commencement ceremonies.

Brew Good to Do Good in the Fight Against ALS

The Oklahoma Sooners are set to visit Jordan-Hare Stadium for the first time in program history to take on the Auburn Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 28, and while they may be foes on the gridiron, the two programs and fanbases will unite in solidarity for the Ales for ALS Fest at the New Realm Brewing–Auburn microbrewery one day prior to the game. On Friday, Sept. 27, New Realm Brewing–Auburn will host the new beer release party and from the very first pour, a portion of each beer will go toward supporting ALS research with the ultimate goal of one day discovering a cure. The event is slated for 5:30-8 p.m. and a VIP reception will be held prior to the main event in the Tony and Libba Rane Culinary Science Center. General admission to the Ales for ALS Fest at Auburn is free while VIP Tickets and sponsorships are available for purchase.

The first professional honor Malcolm Crocker, professor emeritus in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, received — or at least the first of the 48 honors, awards and recognitions listed in the recently released oral history of his career conducted by the American Institute of Physics, a rare honor itself — was the status of Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America. That was in 1973. His most recent? The Rayleigh Medal, named for Lord Rayleigh, a British mathematician and physicist whose foundational publications in acoustical theory are still studied today. Awarded annually since 1970, it is the highest honor the United Kingdom's Institute of Acoustics can bestow.

Many of these neighborhoods have low automobile ownership rates, meaning more pedestrian traffic is on sidewalks and streets.
