Auburn University is home to the No. 1 online computer science bachelor’s degree program in the country.
Best Colleges, an online organization which annually recognizes national institutions, listed Auburn above all others when its 2024 rankings were released on January 23.
Through student-driven surveys taken in 2023, Best Colleges ranked respective programs based on a formula measuring affordability, student outcomes, school/program reputation, diversity and social mobility.
“This national recognition is a testament to the dedication of many – our faculty, academic advisors and online students,” said Hari Narayanan, Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) chair. “Dr. (Richard) Chapman directs the program, Drs. (David) Shaffer, (Tina) Tian, and (Abhishek) Jariwala teach full-time in the program, and other faculty members also teach online the students. A team of academic advisors headed by Clint Lovelace ensures that students get superb advice and guidance.
“Since the survey methodology used for the rankings reflects the top preferences and priorities of students from across the country, I’d say that credit also belongs to the ambitious and hardworking students enrolled in the program. I am very proud of the CSSE family of students, staff and faculty who have collectively earned this accolade.”
Chapman, associate professor and director of CSSE’s online undergraduate program, said the college’s computer science program is an example of Auburn University providing exceptional value to students.
“Computer science is, and will continue to be, a field in which Auburn graduates can find well-paying, stable, rewarding careers in software development,” he said. “We have a distinguished faculty and a motivated, capable student body of 176 students from 34 states in this program, where online learners are a real part of the Auburn Family.”
Earning NSA National Center of Academic Excellence in Cybersecurity designations in cyber defense, cyber research, and cyber operations, CSSE is home to the Auburn Cyber Research Center and the Artificial Intelligence (AI@AU) initiative. With more than 35 full-time faculty members, CSSE offers online degree and certificate programs for graduate and undergraduate students that are designed for flexibility and variety.
The Bachelor of Computer Science program provides a dynamic and flexible learning environment, where innovative pedagogy is combined with modern technology. This degree program admits both traditional and non-traditional students such as working adults, who have transferrable college credits or an undergraduate degree in another discipline, to earn a computer science degree remotely in as little as two years.
Prospective online graduate students have the choice of master’s degree programs in computer science and software engineering, cybersecurity engineering, and data science and engineering, all of which feature the same rigorous curricula as their on-campus counterparts.
