Dean Hendrix has been named associate dean for undergraduate studies and program assessment for Auburn University’s Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, according to an announcement by Mario Eden, dean of engineering.
Hendrix, who serves as an associate professor and associate department chair of computer science and software engineering, assumes the position effective Aug. 1. Hendrix also serves as the department’s director of undergraduate programs and as the director of the college’s Engineering Global Programs.
“Dr. Hendrix brings a wealth of knowledge and experience, and he has demonstrated excellent leadership and great passion for supporting undergraduate students and continuous improvement in our academic programs,” Eden said. “I am very grateful that he has agreed to take on this vital role.”
As associate dean for undergraduate studies and program assessment, Hendrix will lead the formulation of academic policies and procedures; transmission of curricular material through the approval process; adjudication and approval of course substitution and exceptions to university academic/student affairs policies; and he will serve on the university Academic Affairs Committee and other university committees related to undergraduate education. He will also serve as the supervisor of the assistant dean and director of Student Services; the director of Recruiting, Outreach and Scholarships; the director of the Center for Inclusive Engineering Excellence; the director of the Design and Innovation Center; the student initiatives administrator; and the manager of the Brown-Kopel Center. He will coordinate with other offices, including Career Development and Corporate Relations, to enhance both curricular experiences as well as extracurricular-high impact experiences. As associate dean, he will serve as the focal point for best practices and research on undergraduate education as well as curricular innovation for the college.
On the program assessment side, Hendrix will coordinate the continuous improvement processes relative to academic programs, including leading the preparation for the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) reaccreditation and represent the college on the University Assessment Committee. He will also coordinate assessment and evaluation of progress toward meeting the strategic goals of the college.
“It is truly an honor to be selected to serve Auburn University and the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering in this role as associate dean for undergraduate studies and program assessment,” Hendrix said. “As a doctoral student and then a member of the computer science and software engineering faculty, Auburn has been home to my family for more than 30 years, and I could not be more excited about this new chapter. The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering truly is the best student-centered engineering experience in America, and I look forward to being a part of building onto that legacy.”
Hendrix joined the Auburn faculty in 1996 as an assistant professor and was promoted to associate professor in 2001. He has served as the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering undergraduate program director since 2001, as the associate department chair since 2019 and as the director of Engineering Global Programs since 2022.
Prior to his time at Auburn, Hendrix served as an instructor in the Department of Mathematical, Computing and Informational Sciences as Jacksonville State University from 1989-1996.
Hendrix earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer science from Jacksonville State in 1988, his master’s degree in computer science from Georgia Tech in 1989 and his doctorate in computer science and engineering from Auburn in 1996.
Hendrix succeeds Jeff Fergus, who will retire from Auburn on Aug. 1 after 32 years as a member of the engineering faculty, including the past 10 years as an associate dean. Fergus has been named as the next dean of the Frank Batten College of Engineering and Technology at Old Dominion University.
