Advancing Machine Learning for Scientific Discovery Fellowship at LANL Summer 2026

The student application is now open for the 2026 Advancing Machine Learning for Scientific Discovery (AML) Fellowship! The AML Summer Research Fellowship is an intense 10-week program aimed at providing graduate and advanced undergraduate students with a solid foundation in modern machine learning research at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL). This is a paid fellowship that includes reimbursement for travel expenses. Research Fellows will learn hands-on by engaging in scientific research using machine learning. Research will be guided by mentors with machine learning, scientific, and computational expertise. Students will work on high performance computing clusters, develop and apply state-of-the-art ML tools, and gain experience in communicating their work through discussions and presentations. Students will attend seminars by LANL researchers and external visitors. We aim for high-impact summer projects that will lead to peer-reviewed, co-authored publications.

For 2026, we have 12 exciting projects that each touch on interpretability and uncertainty quantification in machine learning, including surrogate modeling for atomistic simulations and molecular docking, Bayesian machine learning, multimodal transformers for forecasting, generative AI for molecular discovery and social network modeling, neural radiance fields and field reconstruction from sparse sensors, and neural simulation-based inference.
