A
home solely dependent on solar power is different
in many ways than a standard electric powered home.
The most obvious difference is that our power plant
is located on site rather than at a location miles
away. In addition, our photovoltaic array produces
direct current (DC) rather than alternating current
(AC), and does so only when the sun is shining.
These
special characteristics of a solar energy system require
a special electrical distribution system. The electrical
system in our home connects the key components of
the solar system to the equipment that uses power
in a manner that maximizes the efficiency of the system
and ensures its safety. The components that require
connection include: photovoltaic
array, charge
regulator, battery
bank, inverter, breaker
box, and loads.
Our team spent a lot of effort identifying the safest,
most efficient way to connect these components. We
also identified a way to ground
the system.
