An
inverter changes the low voltage DC power produced
by the photovoltaic panels and stored in our batteries
into standard household 120 volt AC energy. Calculating
the largest load or combination of loads that we wanted
to run at one time, allowed us to determine what size
inverter was needed for our home. After careful study
and evaluation of a number of options, including building
our own inverter, our team decided to use a 48
V system with two off-the-shelf Xantrex
SW5548 inverters.
This
modified sine wave inverter offered high power ratings
and excellent efficiency. It was cost efficient and
was equipped with all features required to connect
the generator, batteries,
and AC output into one system.
