Storage
of electricity is essential in a solar panel home
because the sun does not shine 24 hours a day, nor
does it always shine at full intensity. Batteries
are needed to store the electricity so that it is
available day and night, no matter what the weather.
Our team evaluated the efficiency and safety of a
number of battery types including mercury oxide, silver
oxide zinc, zinc bromide, NiMH, sealed
lead-acid (SLA), and lithium-ion batteries.
We narrowed the candidates down to lithium-ion, NiMH
and SLA and after careful consideration chose Concord
Deep Cycle Marine batteries.
These
readily available batteries have a long life, are
relatively maintenance free, never need watering or
charge equalization. They run efficiently even when
low on charge - an important consideration in a solar
system. In addition, they are not apt to freeze or
spill, and can be mounted in any orientation. Weight
and a requirement for accurate regulation are the
disadvantages.
Our
battery bank will be located under the decks and will
be encased in a specially designed Kevlar enclosure
designed and constructed by Rats
Back Racing, LLC.
