The
architectural elements encompassed in the design of
Auburn University’s Solar Decathlon home are
the result of studies in composition, spatial zoning,
lighting, material selection, ergonomic
design, scholarly symbolism, and the nature of
place. Important design aspects include: the dogtrot
as a southern vernacular
design element; spatial
zoning created by the marriage
wall; and the symbolism suggested by architectural
elements within the house, including the sundial
and skylight that measure the passing of time
using sunlight. Others include: the
solar megaphones, the
diagonal regulating lines of our design, the thermal
mass water tubes, and the use of color
and natural materials, metal
cladding, and shading
devices.
The
500 square feet home also includes a fully equipped
home office and meets all ADA
requirements.
