In
Alabama as in other parts of the South, people sought
relief from the summer heat on the open breezeways
of their dogtrot homes. Distinctive in both design
and its colorful name, the dogtrot is the most characteristic
folk house type of the Lowland South.
This
element in our design not only evokes the feeling
of a “southern home,” but acts as an organizing
principle by dividing the house along its north-south
axis to clearly define private and public spaces.
It is also a means of natural ventilation and light.
The skylight in the dogtrot area of our home brightens
the spatial zone, as well as marks the daily passage
of the hours and the annual passage of the seasons. |
