Biosystems Engineering students are among the best at Auburn University. Our students receive their fair share of awards, scholarships, and fellowships for outstanding academic performance. The size of the department allows students to receive personal attention from faculty and staff, and gives students hands-on exposure to the latest technologies being used in ongoing research and outreach projects conducted by Biosystems Engineering faculty. Our Senior Design class tasks students with real-world design projects to gain industry experience. The goal is to create a sustainable and cost-effective solution for the project sponsor/client. Past projects range from designing sediment and erosion control systems for the U.S. Army Fort Benning tank training grounds, designing energy-efficient solutions for the Red Clay Brewing Company in Opelika, AL to reduce energy emissions in the brewing process, and even designing rainwater capture and utilization system for Auburn University's Jordan Hare stadium. Check out some of the most recent projects below. Our graduates enter the work-force prepared and with confidence. Industry, government, and university employers frequently contact us in search of young engineers.

Algae Bioreactor Design

Problem Statement:

Dr. Higgins of the Biosystems Engineering Department at Auburn University is seeking a novel design of an algal bioreactor capable of medium-scale production of algae. Algae has many uses, including animal feed, food ingredients, and biofuel. With society's increasingly alarming dependence on fossil fuels, algal biofuel is one potential and promising solution. Because of algae's rapid growth rates, it is a prime renewable resource candidate. Some issues to consider when growing algae include improper light depth, the presence of hydraulic dead zones, under & overheating, and appropriate aeration of the algae.

Opelika City Floral Park Stormwater System Design

Problem Statement:

The City of Opelika has proposed renovations to Floral Park which include a new parking lot, a multiuse sports field, a playground, a press box/concession stand building, a new restroom facility, two water features, an additional walking pathway, and an updated stormwater management system. The focus of this project is the design of a stormwater management system to accommodate the renovation of the park, improve infrastructure, and incorporate stormwater best management practices.

Parkerson Mill Creek Litter Capture Design

Problem Statement:

Auburn University is increasing in size and as a result, there is an increase in student activity and campus events. The increase in activity has created an issue of litter entering and impairing the Parkerson Mill Creek that runs through the campus of Auburn University. Auburn Facilities has brought attention to the need for a litter collection system implementation for the area but current stream litter collection systems have safety limitations by requiring field technicians to physically enter the stream and require heavy lifting.
