SAFETY VISION STATEMENT

The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering (“College”) considers the health, safety, and well-being of its faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors at the heart of its vision:

  • The best student-centered engineering experience in America.
  • Leading research that improves the quality of life and fosters economic competitiveness.
  • A dynamic faculty that exemplifies excellence and innovation.

As engineers, we have a fundamental and ethical duty to safeguard the public's safety, health, and welfare. With this ethos in mind, our College is committed to providing all members of our community, including faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors, with opportunities to be leaders in engineering by creating a safe learning and working environment.

This commitment to safety goes beyond meeting the minimum - compliance; it reflects our strong belief that “Safe Engineering is Good Engineering.” To attain and sustain this commitment, each member (faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors) and operating unit (departments, research centers, administrative units, and student organizations) within the College bears the responsibility to conduct activities with an optimal blend of scientific inquiry and the rigorous application of environmental health and safety best practices. This ensures the effective elimination and reduction of risks in our operations with concurrent efforts to cultivate a positive culture of learning, teaching, and research.

Our Strategy to accomplish this includes:

  • Recognizing the importance of adhering to the highest environmental, safety, and occupational health practices for our faculty, staff, students, visitors, and the surrounding community.
  • Integrating risk assessment and management as an integral component of all operations, including but not limited to experimental design and execution, extramurally funded projects, student organization initiatives, undergraduate and graduate education, facility setup, operations, and maintenance.
  • Providing safety training, education, and learning opportunities for faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contractors to maximize safe work practices and minimize the potential for injury or mishaps.
  • Establishing an environment that encourages faculty, staff, students, visitors, and contractors to identify, address, and freely voice safety concerns, errors, and “near-misses” without fear of reprimand, punishment, or shame.
  • Creating a collaborative environment that fosters continuous improvement in operations among all partners (principal investigators, students, staff, risk management, campus safety, etc.) through open dialogue, reporting, and learning.
  • Offering timely and relevant information in response to questions or concerns about environmental health and safety issues.
  • Implementing a system of accountability, recognition, and rewards for safety within our operations.
