This workshop is free to public agency engineers.

NCAT has developed this educational program for agency engineers to provide a clear and up to date understanding of asphalt technology and best practices to provide the public with a cost-effective and sustainable roadway system. Engineers involved with materials, construction, design, preservation, and rehabilitation of asphalt pavements will benefit from the workshop.

Fees, Refunds, & Deadlines

There is no fee for the course or course materials for any engineers employed by public agencies in the U.S. Costs for housing, food, and transportation are the responsibility of each participant. State Agencies may use the Southeastern Regional Superpave Center pooled fund to cover training costs.

Consultants working in the U.S. will be considered for attendance for an $1125 registration fee. Costs for housing, food and transportation are the responsibility of each consultant participant. Prepayment and registration can be submitted separately, but both must be received no later than ten days prior to the start date of the course. If payment is not received by that time, the participant will be removed from the registration list. Cancellations received at least ten days prior to the course start date will result in a full refund. No refunds will be provided for course cancellations after that date; however, substitutions will be accepted.

Goals and Objectives

The workshop provides technical background in all phases of asphalt paving technology and relates that knowledge to current state practices to improve pavement performance. Upon completion, engineers will return to their agency with improved expertise in fundamental asphalt principles, pavement design, material quality, and construction practices used to achieve a quality asphalt pavement. The workshop also covers pavement performance, construction troubleshooting, preservation, and rehabilitation. Engineers will be able to communicate effectively with asphalt specialists when the need arises.

Program Content

This intensive five-day program takes place from 8:00 am Monday until 12:00 noon on Friday. The workshop includes lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and peer discussions to understand all phases of asphalt technology for practicing agency engineers. Topics include:

  • - Asphalt Binders: sources, physical properties, binder testing, Superpave performance grading, and modified asphalt binders;
  • - Aggregate: geology, aggregate properties, aggregate testing, and blending to meet mixture criteria;
  • - Recycled Materials: properties of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS), influence on asphalt mixture, construction, and performance;
  • - Asphalt Mix Design: desirable mix properties, types of mixes, volumetric mix design, and laboratory performance testing;
  • - Construction: asphalt plant operations, paving and compaction practices, and quality assurance of asphalt mixes;
  • - Asphalt Pavement Design: traffic, material, and climate inputs, performance criteria, and consideration for constructability;
  • - Asphalt Pavement Performance: performance measures, types of distress, and pavement management systems; and
  • - Asphalt Pavement Preservation and Rehabilitation: selecting the right pavement, at the right time, using the right treatment to extend pavement performance.

Laboratory demonstrations include asphalt binder characterization tests, aggregate characterization tests, asphalt mix design, and current performance tests.

Course Materials

Each participant is provided a course notebook, a copy of the NCAT textbook, the Hot Mix Asphalt Paving Handbook, and other supporting documents. These documents are valuable practical references.

Continuing Education

The course will provide 40 professional development hours.

Location

This course will be conducted at NCAT's main research and training facility at 227 Technology Parkway in Auburn, Alabama. Hotel accommodations are nearby and a rental car is recommended. For travel plans, remember that Auburn is in the Central Time Zone.
