Overview

The Superpave mix design system was implemented in the United States with volumetric controls as the primary basis for selecting optimum asphalt content of mix designs. The system has evolved to improve durability and performance, particularly with the increased use of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and recycled asphalt shingles (RAS). This course is designed to provide asphalt industry and agency personnel with a better understanding of developing balanced mix designs using lab tests to assess rutting, cracking, and durability.

Goals and Objectives

This 2.5-day workshop provides a foundational understanding of balanced mix design and includes hands-on training with laboratory tests used by various agencies to evaluate mix performance. Attendees will gain the ability to develop balanced asphalt mix designs in their own labs.

Program Content

The course includes lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on training in performance-based mix design procedures. One day is spent in the classroom, followed by 1.5 days in the lab. Topics include:

Lecture:

  • Overview of balanced mix design
  • Pavement distresses and critical layers
  • Discussion of test equipment options
  • Testing for rutting resistance
  • Testing for crack resistance
  • Testing for moisture susceptibility
  • Balanced mix design approaches

Laboratory:

  • Sample preparation
  • Hamburg Wheel Tracker (HWT) testing
  • AMPT overlay tester for cracking resistance
  • Semi-circular bend tests and I-FIT fracture testing
  • Moisture susceptibility testing
  • Equipment calibration

Materials

Each participant will receive PowerPoint slides and software needed to analyze test results.

Eligibility

Open to all professionals in the asphalt paving industry. Some experience with lab mix design procedures is recommended for maximum benefit.

Fees, Refunds, and Deadline

The $900 registration fee includes the training, materials, and breaks. Housing, food, and transportation are not included. Payment is due at registration. The deadline is two weeks before the course or when full. Cancellations at least two weeks in advance receive a full refund. No refunds after that date, though substitutions are accepted.

Continuing Education Credits

The course provides 20 Professional Development Hours (PDHs).

Location

This course is held at NCAT’s main research facility in Auburn, Alabama. For more information, contact Stacie Hunter.
