Key early steps in the design process such as design elements, horizontal alignment, and vertical alignment, are discussed. This course will be useful as a refresher for the seasoned road designer. It will also provide insight into the design process for transportation professionals involved in other phases of project life cycle.

Course 2 - Design Factors and Other Considerations

This course presents a detailed discussion of the factors that a road designer must consider in making decisions early in the design process. These decisions pertain to key design elements that govern the design process and the selection of criteria for alignment and cross-sectional elements. This course will be useful as a refresher for the seasoned road designer. It will also provide insight for other transportation professionals into the decisions that a road designer must make early in the design process.

Course 3 - Horizontal Alignment and Superelevation

This course presents an overview of the process for establishing the horizontal alignment of a roadway. Concepts to be considered and associated calculations are presented with examples. This course will be useful as a refresher for the seasoned road designer. It will also provide insight for other transportation professionals into the decisions that a road designer makes in locating the roadway and defining the horizontal alignment.

Course 4 - Vertical Alignment and Sight Distance

This course presents an overview of the process for establishing the vertical alignment of a roadway. Concepts to be considered and associated calculations are presented with examples. The concept of stopping sight distance, and how to provide it through vertical curves, is also discussed. This course will be useful as a refresher for the seasoned road designer.
