The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Local Aid Support team continues to recognize local agencies who have successfully used innovation to solve transportation challenges through the Build a Better Mousetrap program. The 2021 Booklet is a showcase of innovations that improved safety, saved time and money and improved efficiency for communities across the country.
Online Learning Resources
This searchable Excel spreadsheet contains online resources that are available to the LTAP community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some partner agencies such as APWA, ITE, NHI, TC3, FHWA, AASHTO, State LTAPs, and others have waived their fees and/or membership requirements in order to make these training resources available and accessible to virtually anyone. This spreadsheet has been made available thanks to the Kansas LTAP and the NLTAPA organization.
Tailgate Talks
Tailgate Talks are short briefing sheets that been provided by several LTAP centers. These one-page documents allow you to brief your stakeholders, work crews, and the general public on a variety of topics such as safety, equipment-related tasks, job site safety, materials, weather concerns, among others. AI in Transportation: Data Collection for Asset Management

Participants will learn how transportation agencies are leveraging AI-powered data collection and analytics to improve asset condition assessment, streamline workflows, and support more accurate, data-driven decisions. Speakers will discuss the foundational role of data in successful AI deployment, including considerations related to data quality, quantity, privacy, security, and ownership.
Coordinating with Emergency Medical Services to Improve Data Driven Safety Analysis and Traffic Incident Management in Rural Areas
Wednesday, September 16, 1:00 to 3:00 pm ET
State and local agencies will present strategies and tools that DOTs and their partners can use to advance the availability and effectiveness of post-crash care efforts, including coordination between DOT and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for Traffic Incident Management, prehospital blood transfer, and delivery of effective training to DOT staff. Additionally, experts will present on the National EMS Information System (NEMSIS) to demonstrate how State and local agencies can use this rich database to information their data-driven safety analysis and safety planning efforts.
Working Together to Coordinate Effective Road Safety Efforts in Rural Areas
Thursday, December 3, 1:00 to 3:00 pm ET
State and local agencies as well as their partners will present effective coordination strategies to sustain momentum for road safety improvements, including fatal crash review committees and partnerships with non-traditional partners like hospitals.
