Training & Education in NCAT
Please take a few minutes to fill out our training survey, and help improve our
services to you!
Training:
NCAT offers a range of training and educational opportunities for the asphalt
pavement construction industry, as well as a class for university faculty. Short
courses in asphalt materials technology are designed specifically for project
engineers, novice or experienced mix designed specifically for project engineers,
novice or experienced mix designers, materials technicians, field inspectors or
testing personnel.
NCAT conducted its first Professor Training Course on HMA technology in 1988. Since then it has been conducted yearly in June, and
will be continued into the future. This course has encouraged and facilitated
the inclusion of asphalt technology in the civil engineering curriculum of many
universities. Personnel from several state DOTs and the Federal Highway Administration
(FHWA) have also attended.
Custom designed workshops can be tailored to meet specific training needs and
can be held at NCAT's facilities or anywhere in the world.
Education:
The primary NCAT thrust in education has been to prepare a standard college textbook
on asphalt technology, and to begin conducting preparatory courses for civil engineering
faculty who teach materials technology. Both objectives have been accomplished.
The textbook, entitled
Hot Mix Asphalt Materials, Mixture Design and Construction, was published in January of 1991. It was well received by civil engineering
faculty and practicing engineers across the United States. This textbook was revised
in 1996; the second edition contains Superpave and stone matrix asphalt. The textbook
will help individuals teaching asphalt technology ensure that future engineers
and technicians will have adequate training to satisfactorily perform their work.
The book can be purchased from the National Asphalt Pavement Association Research
and Education Foundation, 5100 Forbes Blvd., Lanham, MD 20706-4413. Call toll-free
