Design of A Geared Wheelchair Prototype for Shoulder Injury Prevention
The most common injuries among those who use wheelchairs daily are to the shoulders, back, and wrists. This is due to the over exertion of the muscles pushing themselves around all day everyday. The Gear Wheelchair project focuses on how to ease the stress put on the body while using a wheelchair. A three-speed internal gear hub was put on wheelchair wheels. This project compares the oxygen necessary for the muscles to push a wheelchair on different hills using the different gears with the expectation that using a gear system on wheelchairs will decrease the stress on the upper body of daily chair users, resulting in less injuries.
