The Doctor of Philosophy is conferred in recognition of the mastery of a special field of learning as shown by the satisfactory completion of a prescribed course of study and investigation, the successful passing of electrical & computer engineering candidacy and general examination covering the major and minor fields, the preparation of an acceptable dissertation reflecting high achievement in scholarship and independent investigation, and the passing of a final examination on the dissertation and related subjects.
The degree is a research degree. It is not conferred merely upon fulfillment of technical requirements but awarded in recognition of the ability to think and work independently, originally, and creatively in a chosen field. Due to differences across research areas, even within a single department, it is neither practical nor appropriate to establish a single uniform standard applicable to all doctoral students. Doctoral research is expected to demonstrate substantive and measurable scholarly progress, which may include peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, technical reports, or other recognized forms of academic dissemination. However, such examples are illustrative only and do not constitute specific requirements, guarantees, or entitlements for degree completion. These indicators are considered as part of a holistic academic evaluation and are not intended to function as fixed, minimum, or sufficient criteria. Consistent with Auburn University graduate education practices, the determination of whether a student’s overall body of work meets the academic standards of the PhD degree, at the time of evaluation, is a matter of professional academic judgment and rests with the major advisor and doctoral committee."
The applicant should hold a master degree or its equivalent in electrical engineering or related fields from an institution of recognized standing, though one with an exceptional credential, who does not have a master degree, may also apply. All applicants must submit GRE (Graduate Record Examination) General Test scores. The Graduate School also requires international applicants to submit certification of English proficiency, e.g., TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo, etc.
