2018 Civil Engineering Kudos

August 2018

  • Jacob Bensinger, civil engineering undergraduate student, was selected as an Auburn University Undergraduate Research Fellow for 2018-2019 for research to be carried out with Dr. Beckingham.
  • Dan Xu and MD Atique (Ph.D. students in Transportation Engineering), won the student poster competition first and second place, respectively, at the 2018 TRB National Access Management Conference on July 17-19, in Madison, Wisconsin. Dr. Hugo Zhou is their advisor.
  • Molly Hughes was appointed as Faculty Liaison with 100+ Women Strong.
  • Sarah Gustitus (our former graduate student) received the Master’s Thesis Award from Association of Environmental Engineering and Science Professors.
  • Jose Vasconcelos was awarded the Telford Premium from the UK’s Institution of Civil Engineers, for the paper co-authored by Steve Wright, is entitled Air–water interactions in urban drainage systems, published in Journal of Engineering and Computational Mechanics; Volume 170 Issue 3, September, 2017, pp. 91-106. ICE Awards Ceremony will take place at the ICE Headquarters at One Great George Street, London on Monday 8th of October 2018.
  • Lauren Beckingham was awarded the 100+ Women Strong Leadership in Diversity Faculty/Staff award.
  • Jeff LaMondia was selected to serve on the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety (AAAFTS) Travel Survey Expert Panel.   This panel will meet to discuss recruitment challenges and potential applications (this includes use of panel samples as well as other cost effective methods) and innovative data collection methods (this includes self-administered surveys as well as passive data collection e.g., GPS, smartphone, apps, etc.).​ Results from this panel will direct AAA Foundation's future data collection and reporting for the United States as well as set the standard for other organizations across the country.
  • Jose Vasconcelos was invited to present a keynote talk in a workshop at Tianjin University, China, in July 2018.
  • Meredith Ayers (CE graduate student), received a Presidential Graduate Research Fellowship.
  • Michael Izzo, senior in civil engineering, has been awarded with this year's This is Research: Student Symposium The title of his presentation was "Bioinspired and sustainable improvement of the crack resistance of clayey soils", and his research advisor is Dr. Marta Miletic.  
  • Jeffrey LaMondia was invited to serve as an expert panel member on a project funded by the FHWA’s Exploratory Advanced Research Program entitled “Data Analytics and Modeling Methods for Tracking and Predicting Origin-Destination Travel Trends based on Mobile Device Data.” The goal of the project is to produce OD tables, at both national and metropolitan levels, using all three major sources of mobile device data (cell phone, GPS, and smartphone apps). Dr. LaMondia and the expert panel will guide the research project as well as approve products for dissemination..
  • CE Master student David Whitmore has been awarded with the Katharine & Bryant Mather Scholarship by the ACI Foundation for the 2018-2019 academic year​. His advisers are Dr. Jim Davidson and Dr. Marta Miletic.


March 2018

  • Dr. Ben Bowers will join CE faculty and Pavements/Materials group starting in summer 2018
  • Dr. Molly Hughes has been selected as the Civil Engineering Outstanding Faculty.  The award presentation will be at the Faculty/Student Awards and Alumni Recognition Spring Reception on April
  • Nam Tran has been promoted to Research Professor as of Fall 2018.
  • Dr. Hugo Zhou has been promoted to the rank of Professor as of Fall 2018.
  • Dr. Jack Montgomery has been named the winner of the 2018 Chi Epsilon Southern District Excellence in Teaching Award. The Southern District encompasses fifteen universities in coastal states between South Carolina and Louisiana, congratulations on this great honor! The award certificate will be presented at the National Conclave in Arlington, Texas.
  • Dr. Frances O’Donnell was selected to attend the NSF-supported Santa Fe Water Workshop on Modeling and Measuring Socio-Hydrological Dynamics Across Scales this summer.
  • Mostafa Nakhaei, a PhD student, was awarded a David R. Jones IV Scholarship from the Association of Modified Asphalt Producers (AMAP). AMAP is dedicated to the development, production, and use of modified asphalts for highway paving. The association promotes technical research, education, production, and planning assistance. Mostafa’s advisor is Dr. David Timm.
  • Cassidy Crossland have won a 2018 Chi Epsilon District Scholarship.
  • Kelsey Doan have won a 2018 National Chi Epsilon Fellowship.
  • Auburn University has been named an ACI Excellent University for 2017. The ACI Award for University Student Activities was initiated to recognize universities that have participated in ACI-related activities. AU ACI Student Chapter can take exceptional pride in having reached this level since only 25 universities are receiving this award for 2017.  Dr. Anton Schindler is faculty advisor ACI Student Chapter.

January 2018

  • DeJarvis Leonard has been selected for the Civil Engineering Outstanding Alumni Award for 2018.  The outstanding alumni will be honored at the Spring 2018 Faculty/Student Awards and Alumni Recognition Reception. 

  • The paper co-authored by Aravind Tankasala, Dr. Anton K. Schindler, and Kyle A. Riding on “Risk of Thermal Cracking from Use of Lightweight Aggregate in Mass Concrete” was also selected to receive the TRB 2017 Concrete Materials Section Best Paper Award.  This is in addition to being selected as the 2017 Best Student Paper from TRB Standing Committee on Basic Research and Emerging Technologies Related to Concrete (AFN10).  This award was announced during the recent 2018 TRB Annual Meeting.

  • John Hatfield has been selected for the Civil Engineering Outstanding Student Award for 2018.  The outstanding students will be honored at the Spring 2018 Faculty/Student Awards and Alumni Recognition Reception

  • Dan Jackson (CE Graduate student), won the graduate student poster contest for Civil Engineering.

  • Dr. Andy Nowak received an honorary doctoral degree from Warsaw University of Technology

  • Kelly Levy Roberts has been selected by ENR for the Southeast Top Young Professionals class.  She has BCE and MS degrees from our program. While at Auburn, she did important research on the behavior of prestressed SCC.

  • Yalin Liu (CE doctoral student) received the 2018 Best Student Paper award from the Transportation Research Board Committee on Basic Research and Emerging Technologies Related to Concrete (AFN10).  Yalin received this award for a paper titled “Finite-element modeling and analysis of early-age cracking risk of cast-in-place concrete culverts", authored by Yalin Liu, Anton K. Schindler, and James S. Davidson.  This award was presented to the authors during the 2018 TRB Annual Meeting.
