Teaching
Waste Management and Utilization Engineering for Biosystems
BSEN 5230/6230
Introduction to animal waste management and problems of confined production systems, and characterization of animal waste types. This course is structured into three core areas: waste, management and utilization. Introduction to contemporary waste management strategies are mixed with key engineering approaches to attain local, federal and global pollution standards. Waste with respect to air pollution, water pollution and solid waste production are dealt with. Students are introduced to the design of biological treatment and processing systems. There is also the introduction to the various processes for biofuels production from biological and agricultural wastes and agricultural. Particular emphasis is placed on utilization systems with biological energy production through anaerobic digestion of animal waste. This course also seeks to give students a research experience through incorporation of labs, some research and the production of a semester design project.
