David Timm, the Brasfield & Gorrie Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been elected to the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT) Board of Directors for the second time.
AAPT is an organization dedicated to advancing asphalt paving technology. The organization was founded in 1924 and has more than 800 members worldwide. According to Timm, Auburn University and the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) have a rich history in AAPT, with instances such as being elected to the board of directors, serving as president and students receiving scholarships.
According to the AAPT website, four alumni have served as president, and 14 students have received scholarships from AAPT, including Timm himself.
“This is a tremendous honor, and I’m very humbled that they would even consider me with those people,” Timm said. “It’s also a great responsibility because we are talking about an organization that’s been around for almost 100 years. We want to continue that tradition and expand it.”
Timm has been a member of AAPT since 2000. He said the organization is similar to being in the Auburn family because once people are in, they stay in the circle.
“We talk a lot about the Auburn family on campus. AAPT is the asphalt family,” Timm said. “When people join this organization, they tend to stick around for life.”
Timm’s election to the board of directors is his second term, and his passion for giving back to the industry that has served him well is his motivating factor.
“This organization has meant a lot to me throughout the years, and if there’s anything I can give back to the organization and the people within the industry, I want to be able to do that,” Timm said.
Timm’s research interests include asphalt pavements, full-scale pavement testing, pavement structural modeling and pavement design and analysis.
