The top two prize winners of the second annual Engineer Together design competition, hosted by the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s Inclusion and Diversity Committee, were recognized on Wednesday in front of a crowd of students, faculty and staff as part of the inaugural Engineer Together Day.

Camille Coulter, a biosystems engineering senior, took home the top prize of $300 sponsored by International Paper, and a large collegiate rug sponsored by Milliken & Co. Her design will be adopted by the Inclusion and Diversity Committee for use on select promotional items and the Engineer Together webpage for the year.

“I created this graphic for Engineer Together to illustrate multiple elements of diversity, equity and inclusion and to complement the tagline of Engineer Together,” Coulter said. “The group depicted is diverse in ethnicity, religion, ability and gender orientation.”

Second prize in the design contest was awarded to Ashton Stroud, a sophomore in computer science and software engineering. Stroud was awarded $100 from International Paper and a medium-sized collegiate rug from Milliken & Co.

“I have learned that one of the most valuable lessons is being able to work well with others, but more importantly, being able to work with people of other majors, as well,” Stroud said of the inspiration for his design.

The annual design contest asks students to visually depict the meaning of the phrase “Engineer Together.”

“We had eight submissions this year and each told a different story of Engineering Together, touching on elements of diversity, equity, inclusion and community in unique ways,” said Steve Taylor, interim dean of engineering. “The designs echo the efforts of the Inclusion and Diversity Committee as we work toward a common goal of providing an inclusive and supportive learning and working environment for all on our campus.”
