Evaluation of Reheating and Aging Adjustment Factors for BMD in Quality Assurance

Project Status: Active research project

This CAPRI project evaluates the feasibility of using Reheating Adjustment Factors (RAF) and Aging Adjustment Factors (AAF) to account for reheating and long-term aging effects when applying Balanced Mix Design (BMD) in Quality Assurance.

The study focuses on IDEAL-CT cracking performance to determine whether results from hot-compacted specimens can reliably predict reheated and long-term aged performance.

Expected Completion: October 30, 2026

Validation of Short- and Long-Term Oven Aging Lab Procedures

Project Status: Active research project

This two-part CAPRI project focuses on refining and validating AASHTO R 30 (STOA) and R 121 (LTOA) laboratory aging procedures for asphalt mixtures. The goal is to improve consistency, reduce unnecessary steps, and streamline laboratory practices.

Deliverables include statistical evaluation, proposed revisions to AASHTO standards, and implementation guidance shared through CAPRI meetings and webinars.

Expected Completion: 2026

Examining Specimen Fabrication Variabilities of Balanced Mix Design

Project Status: Active research project

Conducted with the Balanced Mix Design Implementation Working Group, this study evaluates how differences in specimen fabrication procedures affect BMD performance test results.

  • Gmm variability
  • Oven temperature
  • Specimen conditioning
  • HWTT specimen preparation

Results will support improved reliability and consistency of BMD performance testing across laboratories.

Expected Completion: 2026
