Teaching Philosophy:

I call my teaching style "discovery based learning" where students attempt to discover answers to problems under my guidance. I believe that active student engagement is essential for learning and retention of course material. When I was teaching science to sixth graders as part of the NSF GK12 RESOURCE program, I was introduced to the concept of “ratio” in which teachers try to maximize the ratio of intellectual activity performed by the students. Of course such an approach to teaching requires a solid organizational framework to prevent students from getting lost. Thus every lecture or lab has a learning objective and an outline that I provide to the class. I also like collecting data on how well my students are understanding the material - this helps me tweak my teaching methods for continuous improvement.
