Workshop Description

Road Safety 365: A Safety Workshop for Local Governments is a one-day training session designed to provide local and rural agencies with practical and effective ways to implement safety solutions into their day-to-day activities and project development process. It develops a safety mind-set by exploring how construction and maintenance activities impact road safety. 

The goals of this course are to: 

• Demonstrate how construction, maintenance, and other activities can impact the safety of roadways. 
• Provide practical guidance on improving road safety that is specifically geared to local/rural road project development processes and day-to-day activities. 
• Enable local/rural road agency road owners and practitioners to identify and access appropriate infrastructure safety information and use it effectively. 
• Encourage participants to develop a safety mindset. 

After completing this course, participants will be able to: 

• Explain the need to make roads safer. 
• Separate safety myths from reality. 
• Demonstrate how to "read the road". 
• Describe practical and low-countermeasures to improve safety, both on existing roads and during the design stage. 
• Identify ways to plan, implement, and fund low-cost safety measures. 
• Access existing resources to find the answer and/or data to address a question or problem that comes up on the job. 
• Identify effective ways of encouraging communities to make their roads safer. 
• Create an action list for implementing at least one safety improvement at their local agency. 

Class size is limited to 30 participants per location. The cost of the workshop is $175.00. Registrants are reminded that registration is not complete until payment is made. The registration fee includes handout materials, break refreshments, lunch, and a certificate of participation. Participants completing this workshop will receive .60 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), 6.0 Professional Development Hours (PDHs). Instructor: Scott Tison

Scott Tison, Associate Director of the Alabama Transportation Assistance Program (ATAP), is one of the nation’s foremost subject matter experts in construction safety (work zones), roadside appurtenances, and transportation materials. Mr. Tison has worked with various LTAP Centers across multiple states. Mr. Tison is a member of several Transportation Research Board committees, including Traffic Control Devices (ACP 55), Tison is also a member of the National Committee on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and has assisted the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) with developing their T3 Curriculum.

Instructor: Tyler Mitchell

Tyler Mitchell is an Associate Director, Training and Technical Assistance for the Alabama Transportation Assistance Program (ATAP). He is licensed engineer with experience in design, construction, and maintenance of transportation projects and infrastructure. Mr. Mitchell has worked as a consulting engineer for a range of civil projects and served 8 years in county government as a highway department engineer. He holds both a Bachelor and Master of Civil Engineering from Auburn University.

We understand that circumstances may arise that could require you to cancel your registration, and we make every effort to accommodate your needs. Due to commitments to our instructors and facilities, the registration fee is not refundable if a registrant withdraws less than five working days before the workshop. You may substitute registrants; please notify us in advance if possible. Non-paid, no-show registrants will be invoiced for the full cost of the workshop. ATAP reserves the right to cancel or modify any program offering but will provide registrants with the option of a full refund. Auburn University will not be responsible for expenses incurred by a registrant as the result of a cancelled or rescheduled workshop.
