Hyun Han, an Army colonel of the Republic of Korea (ROK) has joined the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE) as a visiting scholar.
Han is the deputy director of the Combined Battle Simulation Center of the ROK-US Combined Forces Command, stationed at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek, Korea.
Along with Alice Smith, Joe W. Forehand, Jr. Distinguished Professor, Han will perform research related to simulation analysis for artificial intelligence in the military.
“Most of my job in the military is in the area of developing an optimal solution for force construction and force management,” Han said. “Most of my research is related to simulation approaches and decision-making analysis in the military.”
Han received his doctorate from the ISE department at Auburn and graduated from Korea Military Academy in Seoul, Korea, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in foreign language.
“I chose Auburn because of its good program and excellent professors,” Han said.
Han was awarded a Defense Meritorious Service Medal from the U.S. Secretary of Defense for successfully operating a simulation to support the world’s largest simulation-driven exercise. Because of this effort, ROK-US Combined Forces can enhance their Fight Tonight capability, a core plank of Eighth Army's campaign plan, which represents their determination to be trained, capable and fully-partnered with ROK allies.
“It is such an honor to have a medal from a foreign government,” Han said.
