Second Engineer Together design competition launches Jan. 17

The second annual Engineer Together design competition, hosted by the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering’s Inclusion and Diversity Committee, opens on Tuesday, Jan. 17. The competition seeks entries that visually depict the meaning of Engineer Together.

“We know engineers are exceptionally creative, both inside and outside the classroom. This competition aims to highlight that creativity in a unique way by spotlighting the importance of engineering together on campus and beyond,” said Jeff Fergus, associate dean for undergraduate studies and program assessment and head of the college-wide Inclusion and Diversity Committee.

Past entries to the contest have elicited both direct and abstract designs. The 2021 winning design, submitted by mechanical engineering student Tony Pereira, depicts a sea of raised hands reaching toward the Engineer Together logo. As the winner of the contest, Pereira’s design was adopted by the Inclusion and Diversity Committee for use on select promotional items and the Engineer Together webpage for the year. This year’s winning design will receive the same treatment and the top two designers will also earn cash prizes of $300 and $100 sponsored by International Paper, respectively, as well as collegiate rugs sponsored by Milliken & Co.

Entry into the design contest is open to all engineering students. Students outside of the College of Engineering may enter if paired with an engineering student. Engineering student organizations are also eligible to submit a design on behalf of the organization. Up to three designs per individual applicant or organization will be accepted. Submitted designs will be evaluated by a subcommittee of the Inclusion and Diversity Committee and representatives from the college’s Office of Communications and Marketing. Entries will be accepted starting Jan. 17 and the contest will close Monday, Feb. 20. Winners will be announced on March 15 at the college’s inaugural Engineer Together Day.
