The Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation recently added four new pulp and paper mills to its list of members and received new scholarship endowments of $1 million from the Packaging Corporation of America, one of the nation's largest producers of containerboard and uncoated freesheet.

In addition, Mark W. Kowlzan, PCA’s chairman and CEO, was elected to the APPF board of directors alongside two other prominent industry leaders, Dane Griswold, resident mill manager at Graphic Packaging International in Macon, Georgia, and Jennifer Stacey, manufacturing excellence manager at International Paper's Pine Hill, Alabama mill.

APPF Director Zhihua Jiang, assistant professor of chemical engineering in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, called the endowments a "remarkable achievement."

"The new endowments will make a difference in the lives of many more deserving students and in developing the next generation of leaders in the pulp and paper industry," Jiang said.

The endowments are just the latest successes in the foundation's mission to help supply highly skilled entry-level engineers into the pulp and paper and allied industries.

The number of undergraduate students in Auburn's pulp and paper program, as well as the number of chemical engineering graduate students enrolled in the department's “Pulp and Paper Technology” course, has more than doubled in the past three years.
