Cassie Jones, a doctoral student in aerospace engineering, will receive a National Defense Science & Engineering Graduate Fellowship. The nationally competitive fellowship comes with a $38,400 annual stipend and is renewable for up to four years.
Jones is a researcher in the laboratory of Department of Aerospace Engineering Chair Brian Thurow, who said he puts this fellowship on the same level as the NSF Graduate Research Program.
"Cassie has worked tirelessly over the last two years to achieve a set of well-defined goals," Thurow said of Jones. "One of those goals was to make an impact on the development of hypersonic vehicle technology, specifically by studying the interaction of shock waves with turbulent boundary layers She has made tremendous progress in this regard working with my group on a research project sponsored by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research."
The NDSEG Fellowship is awarded to U.S. citizens and nationals in one of 15 supported disciplines.
Jones, who is from Kingman, Arizona, received her bachelor's degree in aerospace engineering from Arizona State University in 2016. She is a member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, or AIAA, and the Society of Women Engineers.
