Markell and Jim Heilbron
Why Auburn Engineering?
We both enjoyed math and science throughout high school. Since engineering involves the application of these subjects, it was a natural education path for both of us to follow. We chose Auburn because of its strong engineering program and we were both drawn to the campus.
Auburn Engineering afforded us a quality education that prepared for us for our careers. We attribute much of our academic, professional and personal success to our experiences at Auburn.
How did you meet? If you met on campus, could you tell us your Auburn story?
We met in an environmental chemistry class, which involved lectures and labs. Over time, we got to know each other and started dating the following quarter.
On our first date to the movies, Jim forgot his wallet and I paid for the date. I said it was the best return on an investment I have ever made. Jim made up for it by taking me to a victorious Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium. We were engaged a year later and married the following year.
Where are you now? Tell us about your engineering journey after graduation!
Jim graduated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in environmental engineering. I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
After college, we both started our professional lives in textiles. We later transitioned into the energy industry where we have spent most of our career. Currently, Jim and I both work for Alabama Power and have been with various subsidiaries of Southern Company for over twenty years.
Jim has held increasing levels of responsibility in the power generation business during his tenure. His career started as an engineer, progressing through operations, maintenance, and plant management. Currently, Jim serves as senior vice president and senior production officer of Southern Company’s West Production Group, serving on the management councils of Alabama Power and Mississippi Power Company.
I have enjoyed interesting and diverse leadership experiences in various business units including environmental affairs, external affairs, public relations, power delivery and human resources. Currently, I serve as the assistant to the executive vice president of External Affairs.
We have two children, Palmer and Davis, and enjoy sharing stories about how special Auburn is to us. We believe in Auburn and love it!
