Education & Outreach

Auburn University's AC-PABE is the nation's only pulp, paper & bio-resource research and education center that offers undergraduate curricula with pulp, paper & bio-resource specializations for chemical, electrical, and mechanical engineering students, and a multidisciplinary research environment for engineering graduate students and faculty. When these highly skilled men and women enter the workforce, they contribute advanced technologies that enable the U.S. pulp, paper & bio-resource industry to find economical ways to compete successfully in the world marketplace, to achieve full compliance with demanding environmental regulations, to increase productivity and to increase the quantity of recycled fiber.

Undergraduate Pulp, Paper, & Bioresource Specialization

This specialization prepares students for challenging and rewarding careers in the pulp, paper and bioresource industries. These industries are unique in being capable of sustainable development with a renewable raw material base, recyclable products, and processing technology able to achieve energy self-sufficiency and environmental compatibility. This specialization prepares students for a broad range of career paths in process engineering, product development, biotechnology and sustainable engineering.

Online Graduate Certificate

ADVANCE YOUR CAREER AND DIVERSIFY YOUR KNOWLEDGE BASE!

The Pulp and Paper Graduate Certificate, offered through the Department of Chemical Engineering, is available to both degree and non-degree-seeking students who are interested in continuing their education but may not be ready to commit to a master's degree program. A student who earns the certificate will demonstrate an advanced level of understanding in pulp and paper engineering that can be applied in their area of specialty.

Who is eligible?

  • Those who hold a relevant bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited institution are eligible (exceptions may be approved if the student has the background needed to succeed in the graduate engineering courses).
  • There is no GRE requirement.

What can you expect?

  • Students who complete the graduate certificate will have increased specialized knowledge in pulp and paper science and engineering.
  • If a student chooses to pursue a master's degree, all academic credit earned from the certificate may be applied toward the chemical engineering graduate degree.

Program Requirements

Complete four courses (12 credit hours) in Chemical Engineering graduate (6000/7000/8000 level) course work, including the core courses:

  • CHEN 6090 Pulp and Paper Technology 3 hours
  • CHEN 6110 Pulp and Paper Engineering 3 hours
  • CHEN 6970 Special Topics in Pulp and Paper Technology and Integrated Bio Refineries 3 hours

Complete one of the following elective courses:

About the Scholarship

The Auburn Pulp and Paper Foundation (APPF) offers competitive scholarship awards ranging from $2,000 to a full in-state tuition waiver. As an engineer in the industry, you can follow many paths with most starting salaries averaging $75,000 or higher.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must have had an offer extended and accepted to attend Auburn University's College of Engineering and have a declared major in areas with a Pulp, Paper and Bioresource Engineering focus :
    • Chemical Engineering
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Biosystems Engineering
    • Industrial and Systems Engineering
  • Received a Minimum ACT Score of 25*
  • Have a current 3.0+ GPA
  • Must complete the AUSOM Scholarship Application, and select the Pulp, Paper, & Bioresource
    checkbox as an area of interest

TAPPI

TECHNICAL ASSOCIATION OF THE PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY

TAPPI acts as a liaison between students and members of the pulp and paper industry in order to increase knowledge regarding the industry, provide networking opportunities, and keep students up-to-date with industry developments.

Paper Engineering Summer Camp

RISING 10th, 11th, AND 12th GRADE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS | Cost: FREE*

So, you think you want to be an engineer... now what?

Come explore the possibilities within Auburn University’s engineering program, including the Paper and Bioresource Engineering Specialization. This industry is rapidly growing, creating a high demand for highly skilled professionals. Auburn’s Paper and Bioresource Engineering Specialization is uniquely set up to pave one’s way into this sought-after industry. Summer camp participants will receive firsthand experience on what the program has to offer by participating in a variety of activities.

These activities will include:

  • Participating in hands-on experiments with Pulp and Paper faculty with a take home souvenir Tour of International Paper Mill
  • Presentation from recent Auburn University graduates on the Life of a Paper Engineer
  • Tour of Auburn University Engineering Campus
  • Information on how to apply to Auburn University and how to become eligible for the Pulp, Paper, & Bioresource Engineering Scholarship
  • Networking with mill managers and industry leaders

In addition to receiving hands on experience with the program, camp participants will be submerged into campus-life. Students will reside in Auburn's resident dormitories, eating at campus dining facilities, and enjoying evening social and recreational activities. Campers will have 24/7 counselor supervision.

How to Apply:

  • Fill out the online application and pay $25 registration fee
  • Upload a transcript/report card and letter of recommendation
  • Write a 200 word essay answering the question: "Why are you interested in the Pulp, Paper, and Bioresource Industry?"
