Why this certificate?
In the future, the projected population increase and associated increase in demand for food, water, and energy could result in an increase in global average temperature; consequently, there is a need for professionals who can design and develop efficient and effective systems to convert biological materials to fuels, chemicals and products. The Bioproducts and Bioprocessing Graduate Certificate, offered through the Department of Biosystems Engineering, will allow engineers to advance their knowledge in this area of study, which will impact quality of life in the near future. The program can be completed online or on campus, and is available to both degree-seeking and non-degree-seeking students.
You are eligible to apply if...
- Those who hold a bachelor's degree in engineering or equivalent from an institution of recognized standing are eligible (exceptions may be approved if the student has the background needed to succeed in the graduate engineering courses).
- There is no GRE requirement.
To complete the program you must...
Complete two required courses in biosystems engineering:
- BSEN 6540: Biomass and Biofuels Engineering (3)
- BSEN 6280: Life Cycle Assessment for Biological Systems (3)
Choose two courses from the following list:
- BSEN 6270: Metabolic Engineering for Bioprocess (3)
- BSEN 7240: Bulk Solids, Storage, Handling and Transportation (3)
- BSEN 6260 Renewable Energy in Biosystems Process Operations (3)
- BSEN 6220: Geospatial Technologies in Biosystems (3)
- FOPR 6250: Biocomposites (3)
- PFEN 6200: Polymer Processing (4)
- PFEN 6510: Polymer Chemistry (3)
Courses that are also offered online have a corresponding listing with a course section beginning in "D" (e.g., PFEN 6220 Dxx). The course section will change from term to term.
What can you expect?
- If a student is able to visit campus, the lab components may be completed through a one-week residency. Alternate arrangements can be made if a student cannot travel.
- Upon program completion, students will be able to analyze and manage biological materials processing and conversion techniques through the appropriate tools and techniques; analyze information in scientific literature related to bioproducts, biofuels, and bioprocess engineering; and effectively communicate engineering systems that add value to biological materials through oral and written communication.
