Why this certificate?

The Graduate Certificate in Biomaterials, Biomanufacturing, and Biomedical Engineering, offered by the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering, is available online or on campus to both degree and non-degree-seeking students. This certificate will equip students with the ability to demonstrate foundational expertise in the field of biomedical engineering with a specialized focus on biomaterials and biomanufacturing, including understanding and evaluating regulatory and ethical considerations. Students will apply interdisciplinary knowledge of engineering, biology, and medical science to design, develop, and evaluate healthcare-related systems and products.

You are eligible to apply if...

Those who hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, biology, or a closely related STEM field from an institution of recognized standing are eligible to apply. Exceptions may be approved if an applicant has sufficient background knowledge. These will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. There is no GRE requirement.

To complete the program you must...

Complete two core/required courses:

BMEN 6810 Fundamentals of Biomedical Engineering

BMEN 6850 Quantitative Physiology

Complete two elective courses - sample elective courses include:

MECH 6330 Introduction to Biomechanical Engineering

other graduate-level courses may be eligible with department approval

What can you expect?

Students who complete this graduate certificate will be able to integrate engineering principles with human anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to identify and quantify the structure-function relationships of major organ systems in the body and address complex biomedical challenges. They will also assess manufacturability considerations, such as reproducibility, scalability, cost, and regulatory constraints, and apply process optimization concepts relevant to biomaterials and biomedical product development.
