Members of the Auburn ASABE student chapter pose at the Southeastern Student Rally at the organization’s annual Southeastern Student Rally.
Auburn’s student chapter of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) was well-represented at the organization’s annual Southeastern Student Rally, hosted by the University of Arkansas March 13-15. Auburn brought 21 students, making them one of the largest attendees out of the 14 chapters at the rally.
Auburn also earned the Up and Coming Chapter award and was selected to host next year’s Spring Rally. According to Biosystems Engineering Department Head Oladiran Fasina, it’s the first time a student chapter has both won the Up and Coming Chapter award and been selected to host the following year.
“We have seen an increase in engagement and participation of students in the chapter over the last three years,” Fasina said. “Winning this award and being selected to host for next year has really showcased Auburn University and the Department of Biosystems Engineering to more than 200 undergraduate students from peer programs across the Southeast.”
Fasina also said that four Auburn students will be sponsored to attend ASABE’s International Conference this summer, and that two students will serve on the executive board of the Southeastern Chapter this coming year.
Olivia Ray, a junior in biosystems engineering, is one of the students who will be representing Auburn at the International Conference. She has been involved with ASABE since her freshman year and has recently been elected to serve as next year’s Auburn chapter president. She is currently the vice president and previously served as treasurer.
The rallies Ray has attended have afforded her educational and networking opportunities through industry tours, design competitions and lectures from faculty at other universities.
“One of my personal favorite parts is learning about all the research and niches found within the same major across different programs,” Ray said. “It was wonderful seeing the people I met at last year’s rally again to build those connections which are so important not just for professional networking but also meaningfully connecting with those of similar interests.”
Ray said she is excited to represent Auburn at the International Conference, which will be held in Indianapolis July 12-15.
“I truly love our department,” she said. “I cannot wait to show students from across the Southeast why Auburn University biosystems engineering is such a wonderful place to be.” Media Contact: , jdh0123@auburn.edu, 334-844-3591
