Matthew Clegg, a senior in software engineering, is the manager of Maker Assistants in Auburn’s Brown-Kopel Makerspace.
Matthew Clegg has built more than just projects and website designs during his time at Auburn University — he’s also built lifelong memories in the city he calls home. The Auburn native is a senior in computer and software engineering and manager of the Maker Assistants in the Brown-Kopel Makerspace.
Why Auburn
“I always knew I wanted to go into science or math, so engineering felt like a natural fit. I’ve lived in Auburn my whole life and looked at other schools, but when it comes to engineering, nothing beats Auburn. I’ve loved my Auburn experience and wouldn’t trade it for the world.”
Why engineering
“I was originally looking into electrical engineering, but I decided to shift my focus to software engineering. Through my major, I’ve worked on projects related to website design for the Makerspace and helped with the E-Day registration site. I attended several E-Days growing up, so it was cool to support future E-Days from the other side.”
Brown-Kopel Makerspace
“I first found out about the Makerspace in my first-year seminar. I went to the volunteer Makerspace Assistant interest night and fell in love with it. I knew it was where I wanted to be. I started as a volunteer and was hired as a Maker Assistant (MA) the next semester. Now I’m the manager of MAs and oversee the laser cutters. We have several shops that stay busy throughout the semester. One of the coolest projects I’ve seen was a mechanical engineering student’s senior design project — a 3D-printed prosthetic leg made for a golden retriever.
“As manager, my role has two parts. I lead recruitment during fall semester and manage the MAs once everyone is in place. Recruitment starts with our interest night, which was my first experience at the Makerspace, so it’s a cool full-circle moment to host those nights every year. We usually have around 20 new volunteer MAs every semester. I support the shop leaders and make sure new staff are fitting into their roles.”
Future plans
“I’m hoping to take the experience I’ve gained from the Makerspace into my career. It’s helped me build my resume and stand out. My favorite part has been working with people — my fellow staff members and students from all different majors and backgrounds. Whatever I do next, I’d love to continue working with people.”
