David Timm, the Elton & Lois G. Huff Eminent Scholar Chair and chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, has been elected president of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT).

Timm joined AAPT more than 25 years ago as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. He has risen through the ranks, serving multiple terms on the AAPT Board of Directors, vice president and now president.

As president, Timm’s responsibilities will include chairing the board, presiding over business meetings and representing AAPT to the broader asphalt research and practitioner community.

Established in 1924, the association exists for the advancement of asphalt paving technology and serves as a central forum for communication and networking among asphalt pavement researchers worldwide.

Timm said he was deeply humbled and grateful to fellow association members for electing him to serve as president.

“Many of my asphalt pavement heroes and mentors have previously held this role,” he said. “I am honored to be counted among them.”

In his new role, Timm said he will focus on growing membership by engaging the next generation.

“I hope to build on the strong foundation established by the generations of leaders and volunteers who came before me,” he said. “I want to strengthen and promote AAPT student chapters and work with the board to ensure the long-term financial stability of the association. We want to ensure that AAPT continues to thrive well into the future.”

One of Timm’s greatest joys as a longstanding member of AAPT and now its president is the organization’s investment in graduate students through its scholarship program.

“I am especially proud that eight of my graduate students have been awarded AAPT scholarships during my time at Auburn,” Timm said. “Helping students earn advanced degrees while advancing the asphalt paving industry is work that matters, and I’m eager to help broaden those opportunities for more students.”
