Emma Grace Boyd, a sophomore in the Department of Biosystems Engineering from Orlando, Florida, was a state gymnastics champion. Now she’s taking on challenges in both the gym and the classroom at Auburn.
Why Auburn
“I lived in Birmingham until I was 9, so I grew up around Auburn. My family and I always went to football games and gymnastics meets, and my dad played baseball here for two years. Auburn has always been in the family. When choosing colleges, I definitely wanted to stay in the SEC, and Auburn feels like home.”
Why engineering
“I love a good challenge. Gymnastics has taught me to embrace challenges, and I thought I’d give it a shot. My dad works in water treatment, so he introduced the idea to me, and it’s worked out well. Biosystems is a stable, growing industry. I’m good with numbers, and I want to pursue a sales job when I graduate.”
Gymnastics
“My teammates are my best friends — I room with three of them. I love it and wouldn’t change it. There’s nothing like being in Neville Arena. You can’t even compare it to any other place. We get to the arena hours before a meet begins for practice, and we’ll be there the rest of the day. When I’m out there with the team, it’s loud, it’s fun, and it’s amazing.”
Advice for student-athletes considering engineering
“Don’t sell yourself short. You can do a lot more than you think. Take small steps rather than focusing solely on the big picture. Building on small accomplishments one at a time, you’ll find that you’ll get where you want to be.
