Phedra Peter, a senior in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, is from Hoover, Alabama. She’s a member of the Student Government Association and the National Society of Black Engineers.

Why Auburn?

“There is something different in the air at Auburn. Hearing about the Auburn family and the Auburn creed sparked my interest, but I was able to see it first-hand once I got here. The people here are authentic, and they pour into each other endlessly. It inspired me to get plugged into involvement and do the same thing for the next generation.”

Why Industrial and Systems Engineering?

“My dad works in mechanical engineering, and he inspired me to learn more and find answers to the questions I was always asking. I started in chemical engineering, but once I realized I had a passion for the business side as well, I found industrial and systems to be the perfect fit for me.”

Extracurriculars?

“As the college senator for industrial and systems engineering, I’ve had the opportunity to engage with people who are invested in what Auburn students do daily. I also interned with Altium Packaging, where I focused on industrial engineering work. Both of these made me realize I was interested in the backend of operations and the engineering side of organizations and businesses.”

Future goals?

“I’ve been looking at going to graduate school for biomedical engineering. Most people who are interested in what I am use it to practice medicine and apply engineering. However, I want to take a reverse approach where I can work in engineering and apply it to medicine in an unconventional way.”
