Johnathan Deery

Johnathan Deery, a senior in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, is from Hoover, Alabama, and is on track to graduate in the spring of 2025. He works for the Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Manufacturing Systems (ICAMS) and is getting a minor in business engineering technology

Why Auburn?

“I’m a fifth-generation Auburn legacy, so Auburn was always at the top of my list. My grandfather is an aerospace engineering alumnus, and he was my biggest inspiration to study engineering and attend Auburn. Growing up and through my college decision process, he showed me everything Auburn has to offer, and ultimately, I couldn’t turn it down.”

Why Industrial and Systems Engineering?

“I started my engineering journey with an open mind, and as I started talking with other students and peers, it became apparent that industrial and systems engineering was for me. I love the classes and the experiences I’ve had in the field. One of the biggest advantages is the balance between the aspects of engineering combined with the ability to lean into management.”

ICAMS

“I did a summer internship with ICAMS, where I studied manual machining, robotics, hydraulics and programmable logic controllers over the summer, which led to a part-time position. All of the research and work I’ve done has advanced my knowledge in the engineering field to a level I didn’t know was possible. ICAMS showed me what I like doing and what I now know I don’t like doing.”

2024 SEC Machining Competition?

“I went into it with the mindset that we are going in to win — not just compete. This year, we had the challenge of making a gearbox. Through an amazing team and the resources that Auburn has to offer, including ICAMS, we were able to win. Winning this year made the countless hours practicing and preparing worth it.”
