A doctoral student in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering was recently recognized with the Ergonomic Practitioner of the Year Award at the Applied Ergonomics Conference in Orlando, Florida.

Murray Gibson, who also holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree from Auburn University in industrial engineering, is the founder of Saturn Ergonomics Consulting, which provides innovative ergonomic analysis software and consulting services to industrial clients.

Jim Mecham, conference awards and recognition committee co-chair, said Gibson’s unwavering dedication to the principles of innovation, practical problem solving and knowledge sharing has transformed countless environments, ensuring that workers not only feel comfortable but can perform at their very best.

“With a deep commitment to research, practicality, and real-world solutions, Murray has continuously pushed the boundaries of what is possible in this ever-evolving field,” Mecham said. “His innovative approaches, influential work on ergonomic assessment models and his presentations at national and international conferences, have helped organizations and his fellow ergonomist develop customized ergonomic solutions that not only address immediate concerns but also support long-term health and well-being.”

Gibson said he is honored to receive the award and has dedicated much of his career to spreading more information about the application of ergonomics.

“I am incredibly humbled to be recognized for this award by the Applied Ergonomics Conference,” Gibson said. “It’s always a great feeling when your peers acknowledge your hard work and commitment to your craft.”

In 2016, Murray collaborated with Jim Potvin, an internationally acclaimed Canadian researcher, to publish the Recommended Cumulative Recovery Allowance RCRA. The RCRA, one of the first multi-task analysis models, and has been featured at multiple national and international professional development conferences and is included in the curriculum at colleges and universities.

In a recent online survey of ergonomics professionals in the US, Canada and Australia, the RCRA was identified as one of the most popular multi-task analysis models.
