ISE professor honored with Outstanding Faculty Award

Tom Devall, professor and director of automotive manufacturing initiatives in Auburn University’s Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, was recently honored with the Outstanding Faculty Award from the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
Devall, who has taught at Auburn since 2010, was nominated by the university’s student chapter of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.
The award recognizes faculty members who demonstrate exceptional dedication to student success, teaching excellence and support for experiential learning. Devall has played a key role in developing hands-on learning opportunities in the department’s Tiger Motors Lab, where he mentors students and oversees senior design projects focused on process improvement and manufacturing systems.
ISE seniors Carly Walker and Sydney Patzke were among the students who nominated Devall for the award. Walker praised Devall’s teaching and mentorship.
“Dr. Devall is one of the most motivating, welcoming and best professors I have had here at Auburn,” Walker said. “He has been one of the best advisors for my senior design group and boss for the lean lab. He always wants to answer questions and help students when they want hands-on ISE learning. I would recommend his class or advice to anyone interested in manufacturing, process improvement or just a fun conversation.”
Patzke also recognized Devall’s lasting impact on students.
“Dr. Devall consistently goes above and beyond to support his students both in and out of the classroom,” Patzke said. “He takes the time to explain complex concepts in a clear, approachable way and genuinely makes an effort to connect with everyone. His dedication and enthusiasm truly leave a lasting impact on his students.”
Devall continues to be an influential figure in Auburn Engineering’s efforts to provide practical, industry-relevant education in industrial and systems engineering.
