An Auburn Engineering alumnus has achieved college football immortality after being elected to the College Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025, the National Football Foundation announced Wednesday.

Dr. Gregg Carr, ’85 civil engineering, was a first-team All-American linebacker in 1984 and recorded 453 tackles during his Auburn career, ranking second in team history. He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1985 and played four NFL seasons before leaving football to pursue a career in medicine.

Carr returned to the classroom at the University of Alabama-Birmingham School of Medicine in 1994 and is now an orthopedic surgeon in his hometown of Birmingham. In addition, he earned the Distinguished Auburn Engineer Award from the Auburn Alumni Engineering Council in 2008 and received the NCAA's Silver Anniversary Award in 2010 for his professional and civic contributions.

Carr, a cornerstone of the Auburn defense that won the 1983 SEC Championship, defeated Michigan in the Sugar Bowl, and was named a team captain in 1984, also excelled in the classroom with a 3.22 GPA in civil engineering. His combined academic and athletic achievements earned him an NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, recognition as an Academic All-American and acknowledgment as one of the NCAA's Top Five Student-Athletes.

A 2008 Alabama Sports Hall of Fame inductee and member of the 2010 SEC Legends class, Carr’s winning attitude on the gridiron and in the classroom inspired him to combine his training in engineering, sports medicine and orthopedic surgery to treat patients with various sports-related injuries.

The 2025 College Football Hall of Fame Class will be officially inducted during the 67th NFF Annual Awards Dinner, presented by Las Vegas, on Dec. 9, 2025, at the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. Tickets are available at https://NFF2025.givesmart.com.

In the fall, the inductees will also be honored at their respective collegiate institutions with NFF Hall of Fame On-Campus Salutes. Their accomplishments will be permanently commemorated at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta. Each inductee will receive a custom ring designed by Jostens.
