Auburn Engineering is ranked No. 20 in U.S. News and World Report’s 2025 Best Online Graduate Engineering Program rankings, marking five consecutive years in the top 20 and nine consecutive years in the top 25.
Additionally, the online Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) program jumped an impressive 10 spots in the Best Online Information Technology (OIT) Program rankings, improving to No. 13 after being ranked No. 23 last year. For online programs for veterans, Auburn Engineering came in at No. 15.
“Our online programs continue to stand out in the U.S News and World Report rankings, in large part, because of the exceptional work of our faculty and support staff,” said Mario Eden, dean of engineering. “It’s important to offer flexibility to students who need to maintain a full-time job or have commitments at home. We can also ensure they’re getting the same high-quality Auburn Engineering curriculum that will help elevated their careers and equip them with the skills to solve some of the world’s most complex problems.”
The U.S. News and World Report’s Best Online Graduate Engineering Program rankings are based on five factors: student engagement (25 percent), faculty credentials and training (25 percent), expert opinion/peer assessment (25 percent), student services and technology (12.5 percent) and student excellence (12.5 percent).
Auburn Engineering offers 16 fully online master’s degrees and 21 graduate certificates. Graduate certificates allow students to build knowledge in specific areas while also receiving academic credit, which can later be applied toward a master’s degree.
In response to the rapidly growing, demanding field of artificial intelligence, CSSE began offering both a fully online master’s program and graduate certificate program in artificial intelligence engineering in 2024. These programs are designed to help students acquire the skills needed to engineer high-quality solutions to AI and machine-learning problems.
CSSE Chair Hari Narayanan said the improved OIT ranking can be attributed to the rigor of the online computer science programs, small class sizes in which online students receive the same level of attention as their on-campus counterparts, curriculum that mirrors the on-campus courses and outstanding faculty.
“The overall future of the department is bright, and we expect our reputation and rankings to continue climbing in future,” Narayanan said.

Auburn Engineering also maintains educational partnerships with seven engineering technology companies, giving employees the opportunity to earn a graduate degree and develop new technical skills while still working full time.
