Aleksandr Vinel, associate professor of industrial and systems engineering at Auburn University, has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program grant. Vinel will spend the Spring 2025 semester teaching and collaborating at Bilkent University in Turkey.

Fulbright U.S. Scholars are esteemed faculty, researchers, administrators, and professionals who engage in teaching and research at institutions around the globe. These scholars often participate in cutting-edge research, expand their professional networks, and establish international collaborations that benefit their home institutions.

Vinel’s interest in Turkey as a destination for his upcoming sabbatical was sparked by a previous visit as a tourist. He was impressed by the country’s strides in technological innovation, its strong engineering programs, and the rich cultural diversity.

“Turkey’s engineering education follows a similar approach to that of the U.S., with many programs accredited by ABET,” Vinel said. “This common foundation presents ample opportunities for collaboration in unique settings, with fewer barriers to entry.”

Beyond professional development, Vinel is eager to immerse himself in Turkey’s culture.

“Turkey’s blend of Eastern and Western influences offers a rich cultural experience,” he said. “I’m particularly looking forward to enjoying Turkish cuisine—one of my personal favorites—and brewing authentic Turkish coffee, a weekend tradition at home. For me, Turkey is the perfect destination for a Fulbright adventure, offering both professional growth and personal enrichment.”

During his time at Bilkent University, Vinel will teach two courses: an undergraduate elective and a graduate course on optimization.

“While both courses will incorporate elements from my teaching at Auburn, they will also challenge me to develop new material,” Vinel said. “I’m excited about the opportunity to innovate in the classroom and bring these experiences back to Auburn.”

The Fulbright Program, an initiative of the U.S. Department of State, receives funding from the U.S. government, with additional support from partner governments, host institutions, corporations and foundations. The program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide.

“I already know several researchers in Turkey, but spending a semester there will allow me to build direct collaborations and travel throughout the country,” Vinel said. “I believe this experience will not only advance my own professional and personal goals but also benefit Auburn University by bringing back valuable insights to share with students and colleagues.”

Greg Harris, chair of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, described the award as an outstanding accomplishment.

“This prestigious opportunity not only highlights the caliber of faculty within our department but also promises to bring fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to our teaching and research efforts,” Harris said. “We are excited about the knowledge and insights Dr. Vinel will gain from this experience and look forward to the benefits it will bring to our students and to the department.”
