A cohort of Tuskegee students recently received hands-on manufacturing experience through a visit to the Auburn University Interdisciplinary Center for Advanced Manufacturing Systems (ICAMS).

Firas Akasheh, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at Tuskegee, took his Manufacturing Processes students to the state-of-the-art manufacturing facility for a visit that included a hands-on assignment.

“To increase the benefit to the students beyond just a tour, students, with the help of the ICAMS team, learned how to use CAM software, generated a CNC code for a part, and witnessed it machined on one of the CNC machining centers at ICAMS,” Akasheh said.

Akasheh added that it was exciting to visit ICAMS.

“It was an eye-opener to the current state of modern  manufacturing,” he said.

In November 2022, Auburn University and Tuskegee University initiated a Memorandum of Understanding to  expand partnerships between the universities and collaborate on community outreach.

“This partnership with Tuskegee University is a win-win for everyone, especially our students, researchers and outreach team,” Auburn University President Christopher B. Roberts said at the time. “As a land-grant institution, it is important to work to eliminate disparities that limit opportunities for those in underserved areas. I am confident the collaboration that will emerge from this agreement will benefit students from both universities, as well as our neighboring communities.”

This visit from Tuskegee is a great example of this mutually beneficial relationship.

“Auburn is a national-leading academic institution with a mission to advance U.S. manufacturing and modernize it,” Akasheh said. “By working with Tuskegee University, Auburn can increase its impact, and Tuskegee can also bring synergy to the relationship to further the mission jointly.”
