Professors selected for Research and Scholarship Travel Grant to Taiwan
Two Auburn Engineering professors, Gopikrishna Deshpande and Russell Mailen, are among eight Auburn faculty awarded the university’s Research & Scholarship Connections Travel Grant to Taiwan.
Offered by the Office of International Programs (OIP), the grant provides travel opportunities in May to the National Cheng Kung University, National Taipei University of Nursing and Health Sciences and National Taipei University of Technology.
Deshpande, professor in electrical and computer engineering, specializes in signal and image processing, functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), multi-modal imaging and data fusion, network modeling of brain function and non-linear dynamics and chaos in biomedical systems.
Mailen, assistant professor in aerospace engineering, focuses his research on polymers and composites, additive manufacturing, finite element analysis, lattice structures and smart materials and structures.

The Research & Scholarship Connections Travel Grant leverages Auburn’s strongest international partnerships to foster collaborations across disciplines. Faculty benefit from OIP’s contacts and logistical expertise as well as the security and longevity of relationships formed at the university level to make connections needed to further world-class research on the international stage. The grant includes an itinerary arranged by OIP to include meetings with university, government and industry contacts selected based on recipients’ research and scholarship areas.
