The 2021 Summer Olympics swimming events in Tokyo will have a Ginn College of Engineering flavor.

Adriel Sanes, who is pursuing a master’s degree in engineering management, is swimming under the U.S. Virgin Islands flag, while 2019 mechanical engineering alumnus Luis Martinez is competing for Guatemala.

Sanes will make his Olympic debut July 27 when 200m breaststroke heats begin. The former University of Denver star holds school records in the 200m freestyle, 200m medley, 200m breaststroke, 400m freestyle relay, 100m breaststroke and 200m medley relay. He transferred to Auburn in the fall after multiple Summit League championships.

Martinez will make his second Olympic Games appearance for Guatemala, with heats beginning July 29 in the 100m butterfly. Martinez finished 19th in his 2016 Olympics debut.

As a three-time Auburn All-American, Martinez helped the Tigers’ 200m freestyle relay team to an 11th place finish at the 2019 NCAA Championships. He also holds four of the 22-fastest times in the 200m butterfly in program history.
