Faculty and staff from across Auburn’s campus are utilizing 3D printers to continue to produce personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face shields and mask strap holders for health care workers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. What began as a local effort to assist East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Ala. and the Auburn University Medical Clinic on campus has grown to include PPE donations to 16 health facilities across Alabama, South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky.

In addition, the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering is starting a collaborative effort with the University of South Alabama (USA) College of Engineering to print PPE that will be directed to the USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital, located in Mobile. The college was also able to provide face shields for medical staff at the Alabama Department of Corrections.

To date, the team of volunteers from Auburn Engineering and others across campus has printed more than 2,000 face shields and 500 mask strap holders.

“This is one tangible way that we can assist the greater community. Kudos to our faculty and staff for making this happen,” said Steve Taylor, associate dean for research for the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
