The Samuel Ginn College of Engineering recently held its Spring 2020 STEM High School Visitation Day.
“The visitation day essentially functions as a recruitment event for prospective students or admitted students to come to the university, specifically those pursuing a degree in engineering,” said Eric Hall, program coordinator of the Engineering Academic Excellence Program in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering.
For 9th-12th graders, Hall said the biannual event is an opportunity for the university to reach out to underrepresented groups.
“Whether they’re a first-generation college student or from a rural area, we try to target these underrepresented groups and provide them an intimate setting where they can engage and get a taste of the Auburn experience.
Sydney Woods, a junior in industrial and systems engineering, has volunteered for the event since her freshman year. She said it provides a less overwhelming environment for prospective and future students.
“Students and their parents have the opportunity to get a full scope of the life of a minority STEM student,” she said. “STEM Visitation Day helps to form a personal connection with the students that only grows stronger by the time they’re my peers at Auburn.”
Mya Strickland, a sophomore in chemical engineering, said she volunteers for the event because it allows her to connect and relate with participants.
“I have the opportunity to talk to students that I share similar high school experiences with,” she said. “I get to help them navigate college applications, scholarships and have to convince uneasy parents that Auburn is the right place for their child.”
Hall said the event helps increase diversity within the college, providing high school students with all the information needed to show the strengths of an Auburn education.
“We want these students to know that we’re here to help,” he said. “They get an idea of what college is and what engineering is. They get that exposure.” Media Contact: , jdh0123@auburn.edu, 334-844-3591
