John Hatfield, ’18 civil engineering, was named the Department of Civil Engineering’s outstanding student for 2018. Hatfield comes from an engineering family, and he plans to attend graduate school and conduct structural engineering research.
“I grew up in Huntsville, living there since I was four. Having a father who was an engineer and friends whose parents were engineers influenced my interest in the engineering field from a young age. Growing up, buildings and architecture always interested me. So civil engineering seemed like a good fit! Learning more about my major, I appreciate the public service aspect of civil engineering. Almost everything civil engineers work on serves the public in a direct, tangible way and improves citizens’ daily lives. Receiving this award means a great deal to me considering how smart my classmates are! I plan to start graduate school in the fall with a focus on structural engineering and protective structural design. In the future, I hope to conduct research to help improve structural design standards and methodology.”
